Annual Jimmy Fund Telethon Underway

The WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon kicked off yesterday and is continuing throughout the day today. At last check, over $1.7 million has been raised in this year's effort, with $4 million serving as the ultimate target.

Over the past week, there have been auctions and events to contribute to the bottom line. There's also a high-roller auction taking place for a real 2007 Red Sox World Series ring. The only difference between this one and the one the players get is that it says "Jimmy Fund" where the player's name would normally appear. As of this writing, the high bid is $46,000 for this one of a kind item.

During the two day effort this year, NESN and WEEI will talk to a wide range of guests, including doctors, nurses, patients, survivors, parents, athletes, and celebrities. Some of the guests are understandably pretty emotional about what they're discussing, while others bring a lighter touch.

Perhaps the best part of the event is that it brings together people who may disagree on lots of things in support of a good cause. Perennial supporters include the likes of George Steinbrenner and Donald Trump -- hardly poster boys for Red Sox fans.
