Kotsay Deal Said to be Close

Braves outfielder Mark Kotsay was held out of the lineup on Tuesday night in apparent anticipation of a trade with Boston, according to ESPN. "The 12-year veteran is batting .289 with six home runs and 37 RBIs this season. His on-base percentage is .338, compared to .319 for Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp, who is batting .257."

Of course, the Sox are more likely concerned with simply adding quality depth given the fact that JD Drew was lost to the DL today.

Kotsay apparently has a limited no-trade clause so the Red Sox are in discussions with him before a deal can be consummated.

It is possible that these ongoing trade talks (and perhaps the rumored ones for Kenny Rogers) led to the confusion among beat reporters prior to tonight's Red Sox game over who was being called up, sent down, or disabled.

UPDATE: Gordon Edes of Yahoo cites a "major league source" in saying the deal is done, with the Sox agreeing to give up a minor league pitcher for Kotsay. Neither club will confirm the trade, however.
