The Red Sox beat a frustrated Yankees team in the first game of the final series between the two teams in the House That Ruth Built. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays knocked off the Rays 6-2, nudging the Sox to within 3.5 games of the American League East lead. The loss sets New York back 6 games behind the Sox in the AL Wild Card hunt.
The game wasn't particularly pretty, but the Red Sox got some timely hits with strong base-running to outscore the Yankees 7-3. Home plate umpire Jim Reynolds seemed to have a fairly erratic strike zone which particularly bothered Yankee starter Andy Pettitte, catcher Jose Molina, and manager Joe Girardi. The Yankees pitchers allowed 7 walks and gave up 14 hits.
Manny Delcarmen turned in a sloppy performance in 1/3 of an inning, but Justin Masterson bailed him out by inducing a key double play. Johnny Damon got to Boston starter Tim Wakefield for two solo homers, while Jason Bay led the Boston offensive attack, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.
